YWCA Cause We Care House opens today on East Hastings
Vancouver, BC (April 19, 2017): Cause We Care Foundation is thrilled to join Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, VPL board chair Kyla Epstein, and YWCA Metro Vancouver CEO Janet Austin at today’s opening of the YWCA Cause We Care House and nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona branch library.
The $28.5m joint initiative – at 720 and 730 East Hastings St. – features safe, affordable housing for low-income single mothers and their children, and a branch library with community and family programming. Cause We Care donated $1.5m towards the project, as recognized through the name of the House, and is thankful to the many people and organizations that have donated to the capital campaign over the past 6 years years to make the project a reality.
“We are very proud to have played an integral role in making this critical housing project possible and to witness YWCA Cause We Care House welcome its first single mother-led families,” says Andrea Hill, Founder of Cause We Care. “Our commitment now is to ensure the long-term success of the facility through supporting programs and services that pave the way towards a brighter, independent future for residents.”
The YWCA Cause We Care House includes 21 units in a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments and roughly 4,700 square feet of community and family program space. Built to LEED gold standard, the facility offers a broad range of resources for healthy, peaceful, well-rounded living – from healthcare to employment training, fun activities in the play area to literacy and learning in the library. With its integrated approach to developing crucial life skills in a safe, nurturing environment, this multi-faceted project will change many lives for the better.
