Montreal competitors announced for Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship
10 locals chefs chosen to compete for the chance to win $10,000 grand prize at National Finals
The regional competitors for the 2019 Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship’s Montreal Heat have been chosen. After careful review of over 150 excellent submissions from young Canadian chefs (age 28 and under) from across the country, the competition was narrowed down to 40 chefs; only ten chefs per Regional Heat in Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. The talented Montreal chefs are set to compete this May for two coveted places to represent their city at the National Finals this fall.
“Every year we are impressed by the aspiring young chefs who apply and make the selection process increasingly difficult,” says Scholarship founder Chef David Hawksworth. “The application goes beyond technique and creativity of their selected recipes, demonstrating a solid reflection of their professionalism and kitchen etiquette.”
Chef Hawksworth will be joined by a panel of esteemed judges in Montreal, including Chef Jérémie Bastien of Monarque; Culinary Professor of ITHQ, Chef Vincent Lavoie-Beaulé; Chef Derek Dammann of Maison Publique & McKiernan; Chef Marc-André Royal of Le St-Urbain & La Bête à Pain; and Chef Chris Stewart of Vancouver’s Donnelly Group to determine which top two chefs will move ahead to the national competition in October to compete for the $10,000 scholarship and bragging rights as the “2019 Top Young Chef of Canada.”
The ten competitors chosen to compete in the Montreal Heat on May 23rd, 2019 at Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ) are:
- Vincent Baronnat, Le Petit Mousso
- Brady Bertrand, Lightfoot & Wolfville Vineyards
- Marc-Samuel Cournoyer, Cabaret Les Années Folles
- Gary Durand, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon Montreal
- Ryo Ikematsu, Montreal Plaza
- Camilo Lapointe-Nascimento, Le Mousso
- Léon Buser-Rivet, Monarque
- Alexandra Sandoval, Estela
- William Sirois, Le Petit Mousso
- Imrun Texeira, Stofa Restaurant
The National Finals will be held in Vancouver this October and following last year’s successful program expansion in Toronto, will include an exciting schedule of mentorship and professional development opportunities including dinners, workshops and field trips in the days leading up to the Black Box competition. For the first time this June, Chef Hawksworth and previous Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship alumni will travel to Italy for four days to explore wineries and restaurants – these unique experiences are offered as part of the Scholarship’s goal to build a community where resources, ideas, information and advancements in the culinary field can be shared.
